Er Long Shan

An excerpt from an email I sent home before heading to Er Long Shan for the weekend:

"...well here's the schedule for the weekend trip. I swear something got lost in translation. I mean, whats the point of staying over night somewhere if you leave at 9 in the morning! hahah. I'm sure it's going to be quite the trip!! oh my.

We upgraded from 180 rmb (which covers transportation, one night's stay, and all meals) which would be about 30 USD. b/c the rooms were going to be 2-4 to a room and no showers at all and I guess the toilets are really really really bad. So (now) we're paying more, but I guess there's a shower - but probably not hot water and the pit toilet holes are a little better and only 2 to a room!

It's a village about an hour away.  I'll be back Sunday morning. I'm quite sure this village is NOT going to have any internet, so I'll be away - but I'll let you know when I get back. ~ love you! Katie"
Jessica and I outside our "restaurant" where we ate all our meals (but we were the only ones ever served food there).

2         There are two beds in the stay room with shower and toilet, but it is not always warm water for shower.
3         Everyone will take 231.00 yuan for this trip, including insurance, fare, pay for hotel and eating and padding ship. Everyone is arranged to stay with one other in one room, if you stay with yourself in one room, so you should pay additional 60.00 yuan.

My colleagues and I on the boat we thought we were going to be riding.

The boat we did end up taking (Celina and Curt).

View from the top deck (with lot of other passengers we didn't know)

A temple in on the other side of the lake.

The island in the middle of the lake.

Another swimming experience. . . the Chinese were so worried when we went in over our heads!
Starting the climb up the "mountain"

Beautiful view along the way

We made it!

Another complete group shot!
Prayer flags all over the top of the mountain

The lone tree on the hill side was such a contrast - the area was probably for grazing cattle.

Further excerpt from an email sent after I returned to Harbin:
"i had all the things in the picture for breakfast - plus some other gross stuff like strings of tofu and pickled cucumbers...
but what i had in the picture is some warm soy milk that tasted like malt-o meal without the meal.
some porridge (with corn)
some cucumbers (cold)
and some bread (steamed)
all that was pretty safe.

The funniest thing about the trip was not the conditions under which we stayed, but really it was about the schedule. Where it said "arrange by oneself..." well, yah, that didn't really mean that you chose what you want to do. It meant that the choice had already been made for you. and that we should do everything as a group. like go on the padding boat or climb the mountain or rest. This is just something to get used to with traveling with a group of Chinese.

...the love thing is a lock that you buy for you and your love and you scratch your names into it, and then lock them to that tower up there at the top of the mountain...when we go back, we can get one for us...

...i lovest you the mostest. love you, Katie
